Late last October, Facebook officially announced the new name of the parent company that houses Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and others.

The company, which was originally called Facebook Inc., has now changed its name to “Meta”.

It was announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckuerberg announced at the annual Connect conference.

At the conference held on Thursday (10/28/2021) in the United States, Zuckerberg also explained the reasons for the change in the company’s name.

This name change was made to reflect the big goals the company is building.

As is known, Facebook is currently intensively echoing the term “Metaverse” which combines the real world with the virtual.

“To reflect who we are and what we build. Over time, I hope we’re seen as a Metaverse company,” Zuckerberg said.

Metaverse consists of the word meta which means beyond and verse (universe) which means the universe.

Metaverse is a fictional universe that allows not only refer to the virtual world.

But the Internet as a whole, including the entire spectrum of interactive experiences.

That is, the Metaverse is where the physical and digital worlds come together.

People can have meetings, try on clothes, go to concerts without physical contact.

This technology is currently undergoing rapid development which is marked by the proliferation of VR (Virtual Reality) based games.

WhatsApp differences after changing its name to Meta

However, this name change does not apply and does not affect the names of social media products that are under Meta.

The name “Facebook” will still be used for his social network, as well as Instagram, WhatsApp, etc.

“Right now, our brand is so closely tied to one product that it’s impossible to represent everything we do today, let alone in the future,” Zuckerberg said.

In addition, Facebook also ensures that the company structure will not change and will remain as before.

For the record, this name change is similar to what Google did a few years ago.

At that time, Google restructured by establishing Alphabet as a company

with a higher position and become the parent of Google and other large companies.

Facebook changes the name of the stock code. The change in the company’s name also affects the names listed on the stock exchange.

The stock name which was originally coded “FB” will be changed to “MVRS” on December 1.

“We also intend to start trading under the new stock ticker we’ve ordered, MVRS, on December 1.

Today’s announcement does not affect how we use or share data,” reads the official Facebook page.
